Lots Of Upgrades!

After putting off upgrades on omicron for ages (I was busy), this week I finally found the time. So, I’m now running:

Apache 2.2.8
Tomcat 6.0.16
MySQL 5.0.54
Subversion 1.4.6

Woo yeah for them all running smoothly! I was especially happy that converting my Tomcat 5.5 configuration to 6.0 was easy.
As a bonus upgrade, I’ve switched the theme on my [...]

Apache 2.2 Upgrade on Gentoo

I found the time today to upgrade apache on my server to version 2.2. The upgrade appeared in ‘emerge -Dpu world’ a few weeks ago (IIRC), but I’d been putting off until I had the time to deal with it properly. Not much drama in the end, but I did have couple of issues. Here’s [...]

Laptop Beryl-ness

So, after being impressed by beryl on my desktop today I tried to get it running on my laptop. It’s a ThinkPad T42 with a Radeon Mobility 7000 graphics card. It seems that for this hardware AIGLX is best method. After a lot of messing about to get DRI working properly (never bothered with it [...]

Dual Screen Beyrl

Phi is now running Beyrl on TwinView at 2560×1024 Oh so very sweet!
I’m using the Beyrl packages from portage and the nVidia desktop effects method (no XGL or AIGLX). Got it running pretty easily following the guides on the wiki. I had to stop using Xinerama as Beryl doesn’t support it, but getting [...]

First, a bit of background. I’m running Gentoo Linux on low spec UML instance hosted at Bytemark. My machine has a mere 160MB of memory, so this clearly going [...]

Wireless Woes

So, after last night’s updates my laptop’s wireless connection decided to stop working this morning (without a reboot I might add). How annoying. A quick glance at the forums seems to suggest it’s something to do with udev and the ipw2200-firmware. I still haven’t really had a chance to work out what’s broken, since I [...]

Enabling Spell Check In OO.org

I needed to use OO.org Writer for the first time today since I re-installed my laptop. I was disappointed to note that spell checking wasn’t working. This always seems to happen on new OO.org installs, fortunately there is a simple fix (as found on the forums).
To save myself to time searching for it next [...]

IPW Driver Issues

My ThinkPad T42 has an Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG wireless card, for which I have been using the ipw2200 driver package. As this package is being removed from the portage tree in favor of the in kernel driver I needed to upgrade. I found time this evening. All did not go well.
I started by unmerging [...]

Initial Woes With HTPC

I received the rest of the parts for my HTPC this morning (minus hard discs). With a freshly burned amd64 installcd in my hand I began… And was greeted by
No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devices..
Bugger… After a bit of digging I discovered that the jMicron PATA chipset on the motherboard (Asus P5B-E) doesn’t [...]
