Using A Wiki In My Research Project

I have begun to use a (private) wiki as a place to put information that I gather as I progress with my research project. It’s a nice way of quickly adding information in a stuctured manner and having a history is nice for tracking how the project is progressing and I think it will come in handy when it comes to writing up.

Since I’m only using this wiki locally I only need a lightweight wiki server. I’ve chosen DokuWiki for this, since I already run Apache/PHP locally for PHPMyAdmin. The fact that DokuWiki uses flat text files to store the wiki pages might come in handy if I need to copy the data between wikis, or to import the data into another application.

I’m considering setting up a public wiki to hold general information that I (and maybe others) find useful. It will probably contain mostly information about Gentoo, Java, web servers, e.t.c. since this is what I do most of the time, but who knows what will end up on it.

I’ve been using wikis for getting documentation for ages, but I’ve only recently started
